How To Prepare Your Home Exterior For Painting

How To Prepare Your Home Exterior For Painting

If you’re looking to improve the curb appeal of your property, a fresh coat of paint on your home’s exterior can do wonders. However, it is essential to prepare your home properly before starting your paint job. Here are some steps that you should follow to ready your house for exterior painting.

1. Wash the exterior

Having a clean surface is needed for any paint job to succeed, so be sure to wash your house exterior from top to bottom. To save you time and effort, use a pressure washer as it works efficiently. You may add cleaning detergent if there are mould and severe stains present on your exterior. Dry your home for at least a day before proceeding to the next step.

2. Scrape loose paint

Once the house is thoroughly dried, scrape any flaking paint by using paint scrapers and sandpaper. Start scraping the paint in the peeling area until you cover the whole exterior.

3. Seal any gaps

Apply caulk on cracked seams until they are completely filled and make sure you wipe away the excess with a damp rag. When doing this, be mindful not to seal gaps that are there for ventilation purposes.

4. Make home repairs

If you find any weathered wood, try to sand away the discoloured surface to ensure that it will hold the paint well. Also, check for areas that could be rotten. Small and shallow soft spots can be easily dug out and repaired. However, if the rot is already deep and widespread, it’s better to replace the entire piece of wood.

5. Trim and cover nearby plants

Trim and cover any bushes, trees or plants which are near your home to prevent the falling leaves from hitting the wet paint.

6. Apply primer

Put primer on all exposed areas using an exterior grade oil-based primer. Priming helps the paint to stick to the surface and increases paint durability.

Advantages of Intumescent Fire Protection Paint

Advantages of Intumescent Fire Protection Paint

Taking into account the safety of a structure or building is a major factor that contributes to the successful development of a construction project. To do so, various safety measures must be implemented in preparation for contingencies such as fire.

One safety approach any developer can take is the use of the right fireproofing features, even passive ones such as intumescent or fire-resistant paint. Read on to find out why this can be a good investment no matter what kind of building you are erecting.

Intumescent paint acts as an insulator

Available in either water-based or solvent-based solutions, intumescent paint contains a huge amount of hydrates that have evaporation effects. That said, whilst this kind of paint remains dormant at low temperatures, it provides insulation as a reaction to high temperatures of about 200-250°C. When this happens, the paint expands significantly, becoming a layer of low-conductivity char which shields structural items from malformation and damage.

It provides a stunning finish

Apart from acting as a great insulator, intumescent paint allows the final layer to be mixed with pigments and provide an aesthetically pleasing finish that further enhances the appearance of exposed steelworks. This is the reason why it remains a favourite in both architectural and large public buildings alike.

It has various applications

Another advantage of utilising intumescent paint is its capacity to be applied in different areas of a building and on various materials such as metal, concrete, chipboard, plasterboard, brick, softwoods, hardwoods and MDF or medium density fibreboard.
